Munich, November 18, 2020 (KK) - Pierre-Auguste Renoir possessed an unerring feel for beauty. Two top lots by the French master of Impressionism that will be called up in the 19th-21st Century Art Auction at Ketterer Kunst in Munich on December 11/12 attest to that.

The auction is led by an enchanting young lady which Pierre-Auguste Renoir eternalized in "Portrait de femme" from around 1885. The study of an elegant fin-de-siècle Parisian was rendered with an easy flow, and is characterized by her delicate facial features through which the artist expresses the individual character as a stylized expression of perfect female beauty. The pastel, which has a renowned provenance as part of the collection of the poet Dr. Hans Bethge, will enter the race with an estimate of € 90,000-120,000, while the 30 years younger oil painting "Rosen" may perhaps be available for € 70,000-90,000. The signature motif is part of the series of still lifes of roses that did not only give distinction to Renoir's late work, but also became emblematic of the artist, comparable with Monet's water lilies and van Gogh's sunflowers.

Next to Edward Theodore Compton's testimony of the commanding beauty of the Alpine landscape in "Sylvretta vom grossen Maderer" (see separate press release), Edward Cucuel's "Spätsommer" is yet another oil painting by an acclaimed international artist on offer. It unites the loveliness of nature with the charm of the model and was made during the important period in which the artist was occupied with the female portraits of Leo Putz, member of the artist group "Scholle". Both works are estimated at € 30,000-40,000 each.

The range of domestic artists is led by Franz von Stuck's 1912 oil painting "Adam und Eva (Die Familie)" and can, owing to the depiction of Eve the first woman and mother of mankind, be understood as an homage to femininity. The overall fascinating picture of a bold reinterpretation of an ancient motif used to be in the possession of Max von Bleichert, one of the most important collectors of works of German Impressionism and Symbolism at the beginning of the 20th century, it will now be called up with an estimate of € 70,000-90,000. Apart from the watercolor "Satyr mit Nymphen", the Munich painter also contributes the two bronzes "Amazone" and "Tänzerin" to the range of offers.

With "Nachtwächter bei Mondschein, Hund und Katze" Carl Spitzweg enriches the auction with a work of true museum quality. The special nightwatchman scene in an unusual landscape format, to which Spitzweg added a narrative dimension with the humorous details of dog and cat, was made around 1870 and is estimated at € 50,000-70,000.

More inspiring artworks come from, among others, Max Clarenbach, Karl Philipp Fohr, Louis Gurlitt, Karl Hagemeister, Carl Morgenstern, Fritz Overbeck, Ludwig Adrian Richter, Johann Wilhelm Schirmer and Wilhelm Trübner (see separate press release).
