Brücke über die Elbe (Augustusbrücke in Dresden)
Watercolor, 1925/1930
12.9 x 18.2 inches
€ 40,000-60,000
Munich, November 18, 2019 (KK) - Emil Nolde loved nature and the sea. With his watercolor "Brücke über die Elbe", one of his very rare depictions of a historical monument will be called up in the anniversary auction at Ketterer Kunst in Munich on December 6 and 7.

Emil Nolde's love of water found expression in many of his works. He was fascinated by both the close North and Baltic Sea, as well as by the distant South Seas, he loved lakes and rivers, rain showers and snow. At first sight the observer may be surprised by his choice of motif in Dresden, however, the artist found nature in the city and had the opportunity to merge both to an organic whole.

On Augustusbrücke, which connects Old and New Town across the river Elbe, the artist found a spot where something primal and natural encounters something man-built, a result of technical progress. Emil Nolde's contemporaries also saw his works as reflections of the modern world. The reduced composition of "Brücke über die Elbe (Augustusbrücke in Dresden)" captures the world of Modernism and combines it with ageless grandeur. This way the artist rendered the actual dynamics in the calmness of his swiftly executed watercolors with great mastery. For more details:

Apart from this work more than a dozen watercolors by Emil Nolde with estimate prices of up to € 120,000 will be called up.

All of them are in good company, as the anniversary auction on occasion of the 65th birthday of the world-wide renowned auction house also comprises objects by internationally celebrated artists such as Tony Cragg, Otto Dix, Jean Dubuffet, Katharina Grosse, Erich Heckel, Barbara Hepworth, Alexej von Jawlensky, Alex Katz, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Yves Klein, Hermann Max Pechstein, Pablo Picasso, Gerhard Richter, William Turnbull, Günther Uecker and Andy Warhol. This array makes for quite some suspense as to whether the magical million-euro-line will be crossed again.
