Berlin, April 12 2019 (kk) - On his search for ways out of the two- and three-dimensional world he came up with fascinating solutions. On occasion of his 80th birthday Ketterer Kunst in Berlin honors Horst Kuhnert with a retrospective. As of June 22, 2019 around 30 select works by the artist will be on display at Fasanenstrasse 70.

The exhibition will show a cross section through the œuvre of the Lower Silesian artist. Paintings, prints, drawings, as well as reliefs and sculptures will highlight "space" as the key aspect of Horst Kuhnert's creation. With an objective similar to Lucio Fontana, he also sought suitable ways of leaving the plane and conquering space.

"The spatialization of the surface was the basic concept for my polyester works in 1964. Concrete forms like circles, squares, rectangles and triangles provided the starting point of my reliefs and sculptures that are characterized by convex and concave stylistic elements. Another crucial factor was the "light" which emphasizes the plasticity of the often monochrome works kept in yellow, red, blue and, first and foremost, black and white", says the artist himelf.

Horst Kuhnert was one of the first artists to use the synthetic material - creating exceptional works of art. After he had completed his studies at the State Art Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart, Horst Kuhnert turned his back on abstract painting as of 1963 and developed an increasing interest in sculptures. For the realization of his concept "the spatialization of the surface" he predominantly used polyester for his reliefs made as of 1964. In 1989 the work group "Stabil-Instabil" with panel paintings, collages and sculptures followed. Since 2010 Horst Kuhnert has taken another bold step by creating a new body of works with paintings and sculptures on the theme "from the real to the imaginary space", in which he strives to open up a new level of perception for the observer.

The artist lives and works in Stuttgart. His works are in possession of, among others, the Daimler Art Collection, the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart and the Deutscher Bundestag.

Horst Kuhnert celebrates his 80th birthday on June 22, 2019 and will be present at the opening reception of the exhibition "Horst Kuhnert – Zum 80. Geburtstag" on June 21, 2019 at 7 pm. After a short welcoming speach from Dr. Simone Wiechers, curator of the exhibition and head of the Berlin branch of Ketterer Kunst, Leane Schäfer, director of the Kunstmuseum Gelsenkirchen, will hold a lecture.
