Munich, 08 May, 2014, (kk) – Baumeister, Chagall, Kirchner, Matisse, Mueller, Nay, Nolde, Uecker and, of course Hermann Max Pechstein are just some of the acclaimed artists that contribute their masterpieces to Ketterer Kunst's jubilee auction. On 6 and 7 June they will be called up with estimates reaching six-digit realms in the auction with the following sections:
1) Modern Classics
2) Post War Art
3) Contemporary Art

on 1) Modern Classics

Next to Hermann Max Pechstein's work from 1910 with paintings on both sides (estimate: € 600.000-800.000, see illu.), this section is led by an extraordinary self portrait by Otto Mueller (estimate: € 300.000-400.000). The self-portrait that Otto Mueller made only one year before his death is less an account of the painter in action, but rather a display of the private person Otto Mueller who seems to be present in the studio by chance, while a young nude model poses behind him. Mueller's posture shows a certain resignation, despite the presence of the lusty model, presumably his former student and later wife Elfriede.

The artist's wife can also be found in the background of Marc Chagall's studio scene "Le peintre dans son atelier". Further personal elements of crucial importance to the artist, such as the window of his house in Vence, the easel with the flower still life and his palette can also be found. The work, kept in various shades of blue, emanates the magic of a nocturnal melancholy and will enter the race with an estimate of € 100.000-150.000.

The same estimate has been tagged to Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's woodcut "Maler und Modell - Dichter und Weib" from 1903. Kirchner is represented with several works at once, just as it is the case with Emil Nolde, whose powerful watercolor "Bauernhof unter Gewitterwolken", also estimated at € 100.000-150.000, is particularly worthwhile mentioning. Artists such as Caspar David Friedrich and William Turner had already discovered the dramatic plays of lights and clouds, but the dominating sky with its dramatic impact and the lucent coloring of Nolde's works was an absolute novelty around 1935.

Just as unusual are Nolde's "Celosienblüten", they are particularly captivating for the tension created by the blossoms extending into the image from left. The estimate for this flower bouquet splendidly staged in front of an atmospheric landscape is at € 50.000-70.000.

Next to the atrocities of war, Otto Dix examines the depth of human sexuality and instincts in his very own veristically exaggerated realism. He became a critical chronicler of a society that had become out of whack through World War I and made impressive visual contemporary documents, such as the "Hamburger Kneipe" (estimate: € 60.000-80.000) from around 1922.

Other artist's and works worthwhile mentioning are Henri Matisse's "Tête de jeune fille" (estimate: € 80.000-340.000), Salvador Dalí's watercolor "Framboisier á Fruit rouge" (estimate: € 60.000-80.000), Hermann Max Pechstein's small oil painting "Herbstmeer" and Lyonel Feininger's "Coasting Vessels" (estimates: each € 40.000-60.000), as well as works by Georg Tappert ("Fasching", estimate: € 30.000-35.000), Paul Klee ("No title", estimate: € 28.000-34.000) and Kurt Schwitters'. The latter is represented with an uncollaged paper work from the late 1920s, which are very rare on the international auction market (estimate: € 35.000-40.000).
on 2) Post War
Baumeister
Willi Baumeister
Mo
Oil with synthetic resin and sand
on hard fibre board
54 x 46 cm (21.2 x 18.1 in)
Estimate: € 300.000-500.000
Next to very special works by Günther Uecker and Lucio Fontana (see separate press release), this section is led by Willi Baumeister's masterpiece "Mo" from 1954. The work from the famous "Montaru" series has been estimated at € 300.000-500.000. The title is an onomatopoetic neologism consisting of the word "mont" (mountain) and the sound "Aru", which hints at the images' impermeable dark and is derived from the name of the biblical Mount Ararat. Paintings from this impressive complex are in possession of, among others, the Nationalgalerie Berlin.

Another lot at the top of the list of desires is definitely going to be Ernst Wilhelm Nay's "Irisch Blau". The work from 1964, made in context of the "Augenbilder", captivates the observer with its lucent colors and the masterly composition. The estimate is at € 250.000-350.000.

Further impressive works are Frank Auerbach's "J.Y.M in the Studio II" (estimate: € 200.000-300.000), Heinz Mack's "Erzengel Michael und Gabriel" (estimate: € 150.000-200.000), Sérgio de Camargo's "Relief n° 329" (estimate: € 140.000-180.000), Anselm Kiefer's "Raganarök" (estimate: € 125.000-175.000), Allen Jones' "Bra-la-la!" (estimate: € 120.000-150.000) as well as works by such renowned artists as Francis Bacon, Norbert Bisky, Rupprecht Geiger, Imi Knoebel, Marino Marini, Otto Piene, Serge Poliakoff, Neo Rauch, Gerhard Richter, Fred Thieler und Andy Warhol.
On 3) Contemporary Art
This section, which had its premiere with an individual catalog in autumn 2013, now offers even a wider range of respectable names and pieces of art by such renowned and important artists as Jonas Burgert, Carsten Höller, Maurizio Cattelan, Liam Gillick, Jack Goldstein, Rodney Graham, Bjarne Melgaard, Steven Parrino, Daniel Richter and Dirk Skreber (Details see separate release).
