Berlin, 23 May 2014 (kk) – The exhibition "Günther Förg: The power of Color" is an homage to the artist who passed away in December 2013 at just 61 years of age. His constant quest for ever new forms, colors, expressions and positions is going to be honored at Ketterer Kunst in Berlin from 3 June to 14 August.
Günther Förg, who dedicated his oeuvre to the essence of line and surface, arranged his image areas in vertical and horizontal fields. The reason for this clear structure is his deep passion for modern architecture of the 20th century. Intentionally, he entirely did without any narrative approaches.
First and foremost, his rectangular "Fensterbilder" (Window Pictures) are evocative of opened or closed windows and allow the observer both insight as well as foresight. They are about clear and calm lines, views, moments and spaces. The almost expressive stroke of the brush makes for both transparency as well as a modified monochromy. His works are nurtured by insinuation. Förg's focus on reduced forms and the power of color has an immediate effect on the observer. It brings back memories, develops new ideas and allows for manifold associations while challenging the eye's universal functions and human perception in general.
Günther Förg's central importance for German post-war art is indisputable. His work has been honored in renowned exhibitions in Germany and abroad (e.g.: documenta IX Kassel, Pinakothek der Moderne Munich, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam). He held several professorships and received the acclaimed Wolfgang-Hahn-Prize in 1996.
