Munich, 24 September 2013, (kk) – The greatest treasures can be found off the beaten track. The same is true for the Special Auction "Sidelines of the Gernman Avant-garde", which will have its tenth anniversary on 6 December, 2013.
"I am highly pleased to celebrate this jubilee, because it shows the great interest in this special topic", says Robert Ketterer. He continues: "I am happy to say that we have been able to get more and more people into the art that has long been forgotten and lost during the war. This way the few works that have survived receive the recognition they deserve. In terms of quality, they do not have to fear the competition of names like Otto Dix, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner or August Macke".
With the concept of the Sidelines Auctions, Ketterer Kunst not only provides a stage for artists of Expressionism and New Objectivity whose œuvre was sharply decimated during the Third Reich, but in addition, an impulse for the rediscovery of forgotten talents. The auction's target group are art lovers with an eye for high quality rather than an ear for big names. The great demand and the fact that the auction is held for the tenth time show that the concept works.
The current special catalog focuses on works made between 1900 and the mid 1930s. The range of offerings is led by a work with oil painting on both sides by the pilot and graphic artist Robert Michel, who was a close friend of Willi Baumeister, László Moholy-Nagy, Jan Tschichold and Kurt Schwitters. The work, estimated at € 20.000-30.000, from 1919/1920, shows the detailed depiction of a boat ("Schiff") in shades of blue on the frontside and a colorful abstract "Komposition" on the back.
Another lot at the top of the list is Paul Kother's oil painting "Zigeunerin mit Kind", which has been estimated at € 12.000-15.000.
€ 5.000-7.000 is the estimate for Willy Robert Huth's expressive "Straßenszene". The pastel is particularly captivating for its lucent blue colors and the forceful faces.
Max Schwimmer, who is represented with half a dozen works, has already become established in this auction. This time the range of his works is led by the watercolor "Kopf" from 1919. The estimate is at € 4.000-6.000.
The wider focal point is on artists such as Christian Arnold, Lou Albert-Lasard, Max Austermann, Erich Büttner, Heinrich Ehmsen, Friedrich G. Einhoff, Otto Fischer-Trachau, Paul Fuhrmann, Paul Goesch, Gottfried Graf, Walter Gramatté, Werner Heuser, Reinhard Hilker, Julius Hüther, Annemarie Jacob, Paul Kuhfuss, Otto Meyer-Amden, Hilla Rebay von Ehrenwiesen, Frédéric Rechberg, Karl Peter Röhl, Anta (Antonia) Rupflin, Otto Schön, Jakob Steinhardt, Fritz Stuckenberg, Eberhard Viegener and Paul Wassily.
The special auction is held in the context of the auction of Modern Art, which offers highlights by artists such as Marc Chagall, Edward Cucuel, Otto Freundlich, Karl Hofer, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Paul Klee, Gabriele Münter, Hermann Max Pechstein, Pablo Picasso, Hans Purrmann and Kurt Weinhold (see separate press release).
