Auction Modern Art
Expressionism Galore -
Not only from the Collection Schiefler
Not only from the Collection Schiefler
Munich, 7 April, 2011, (kk) - "Gustav Schiefler - a name that truly guarantees connoisseurship, authenticity and quality. Which is why I am particularly happy that we will auction works by, among others, Erich Heckel, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Max Liebermann from this unique collection on May 14", thus Robert Ketterer.
As part of the auction of Modern Art, 28 works will be called up in the Special Auction Collection Schiefler. Gustav Schiefler, who was not only occupied intensively with the artistic work of his contemporaries, but also maintained close friendships with the artists, also compiled the relevant catalog raisonnés of prints by, for example, Edvard Munch, Emil Nolde and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. His collection, about whose development he wrote a book, is now the source of both print works and rare artist postcards.
The top position of this special auction is occupied by Emil Nolde's "Kopf" from presumably 1916-1918. Its lively expression, which dominates the portrait, is easiest to recognize in the area around the eyes, it hints at a personality that must have clearly impressed the artist with its spirited charisma. The subtle coloring Nolde used to emphasize the traits clearly does without any narrative details in favor of an overall expression that is even more underlined by a wash in varying colors. The estimate for this watercolor and India ink work is at € 25 000-35 000.
Karl Schmidt-Rottluff's extremely rare woodcut "Akte vor dem Vorhang" from 1911 has been estimated at € 12 000-15 000, it originates from a time when the artist still printed the woodcuts himself. This is also why there are rarely more than ten prints of motifs made up until 1912 in existence, in many cases he didn't even reach that count.
Another hand-made proof is Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's drypoint etching "Blonde Pippa in weißem Tanzkostüm mit Schirm" from 1911. With this print, carrying an estimate of € 8 000-12 000, a copy from the first print state is offered on the international auction market for the first time*.
Next to Kirchner's woodcut in colors "Gerichtsszene aus Shaw's heiliger Johanna" from 1925 and the lithograph "Allee am Abend" from 1908, which have both been valued between € 6 000-8 000 each, the postcard "Strassenszene", a joint greeting from Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Erich Heckel to the wife of Gustav Schiefler from 1910, will be called up. For both this work as well as Heckel's postcard of an "Ananas-Esser" from the same year € 3 000-4 000 have been estimated.

In general, the offering of the auction of Modern Art promises exciting art, for instance Paul Klee's pencil drawing "Blumen in zwei Gläsern" (estimate: € 18.000-24.000) and Karl Schmidt-Roffluff’s watercolor and India ink drawing "Die Weißen Blumen" (estimate: € 12.000-16.000), but it is Oskar Kokoschka’s watercolor "Sitzender Mädchenakt" that is particularly wortwhile mentioning. Broad, and swift strokes of the brush in light and nuanced colors put an emphasis on the autonomy of color. The estimate is at € 20 000-25 000.
Heinrich Nauen

Joan Miró and Sonia Delaunay-Terk are represented with the portfolios "Ubu Roi" (estimate: € 12 000-14 000) and "Les Illuminations" (estimate: € 11 000-13 000) respectively, Renée Sintenis contributes the bronze "Galloppierendes Fohlen" from 1929 (estimate: € 8 000-10 000).
Besides the work "Rosen" made by Christian Rohlfs around 1916 (estimate: € 7 500-9 500) and Heinrich Nauen’s "Sonnenblumen in bemalter Vase mit Doppelhenkel" (estimate: € 10 000-15 000), the range of offers will be topped off with works by renowned artists such as Lyonel Feininger, Alexej von Jawlensky, Otto Mueller, Oskar Schlemmer and Maurice de Vlaminck.
