The drastic accounts of the Hamburg harbor milieu always have notions of empathy for its protagonists, despite the socio-critical aspects. An unusually liberal handling combined with a poised eye for special situations, also characterize this work. It may have been intended as an illustration for release, as it remained unsigned. However, Elfriede Lohse-Wächtler had difficulties in selling her art for a good price. Always making ends meet, the artist made many of her best works while in dire straits. Our sheet definitely counts among them.
