Ohne Titel. 1991.
Collage of 36 postcard.
Each postcard numbered, dedicated and inscribed as well as typographically printed. Postcards made of light board, firmly mounted on paper-coated styrofoam plate. 94.7 x 59.7 cm (37.2 x 23.5 in).

PROVENANCE: Private collection Northern Germany (present from artist).

Postcards have been used by Hanne Darboven as a material for her art since the 1970s. Her approach of putting the repeated text on verso, instead of the motif on the front as usual into the focus, seems a logic consequence in the face of the importance of seriality for Darboven's work. What at first sight looks like a monotonuos sequence of the same short message on 36 postcard text fields, shows minimal deviations in writing style and numbers. Additionally, the personal birthday greeting from the artist and her beloved goat "Micky" is opposite of the consecutive numbering in the franking field. This way Darboven ennobles the writing to the actual motif, adding both formal aesthetics and intention.
