Born in Munich in 1881, Fritz Stuckenberg was active as theater painter in Leipzig and studied at the Weimar School of Arts and Crafts Weimar as well as at the Munich Academy. After he had lived in Paris for a couple of years, participating in exhibitions of the Salon d'Automne, he went to Berlin and joined the circle of "Sturm" artists and the "Novembergruppe". In 1922 the painter settled in Delmenhorst. His initially expressionist style, shaped by his days in Paris and Berlin, reached a more futurist-constructivist level after 1920. Accordingly, the plant motif in this work already shows tendencies of abstract color fields, which seem to detach from the velvety undefined background. [KP].
