Hugo de Sancto Caro, Postilla super Evangelia. [Basel, B. Richel, 10 January 1482]. Contemp. half pigskin binding over strong wooden boards with blindtooling: frame of quadruple slant iron lines, center panels on boards and spine with rose-, lily- and heart stamps; also with 2 brass clasps. Folio. 468 (of 492) unnumb. ll. Gothic type, 2 cols., 62 lines and headline, with pilcrow sign in red and blue.Hain 8975. - GW n0223. - Goff H 529. - BMC III, 738. - BSB H-430. - Vander Haegen 9.16. - First edition of the important Gospel commentary. At the same time one of Bernard Richel's last print. It is said that at times ome 500 monks were active in his Basel printshop. - The dominican Hugo de Saint-Cher (around 1200-1263) was cardinal, advisor and diplomat of Gregor IX. and Pope Innocent IV. He is regarded one of the Middle Age's most influential bible commentators. - Lacking first quire as well as single ll. (most at the Gospel's beginnings), also lacking last blank leaf. The first (b1) and last leaf (v7) only as fragment. - With slight isolated stains and browning, first ll. with marginal blemish. Binding skillfully restored in places, pastedown using an old vellum manuscript. All in all fine and broad-margined print with contemp. marginalia.First edition of this important commentary. Fine printing by B. Richel in Basle. Contemp. half pigskin over wooden boards with single tools (rosettes, lily, heart), 2 brass clasps (partly skilfully restored, pastedown by using an early ms. on vellum). 468 (of 492) nn. leaves, lacking the first quire and single leaves, mostly at the beginning of a Gospel. First (b1) and last leaf (v7) only a fragment. - Here and there minor staining or browning, first leaves with marginal defects. Contemp. marginalia in places.
