Nissen 3742. - Wood p. 555. - Agassiz IV, 283, 7. - ADB XXXII, 350 f. -MNE II, 219. - Rare. First German edition of the beautifully illustrated work on turtles. Johann David Schöpf (1752-1800) wasa natural scientist and travelogue writer. He thoroughly prepared his main work on zoology "by increasing his collections on observations by means of a comprehensive correspondence" (translated from ADB). "This is the German rendering of the author's Historia testudinum , of the same date, essays on turtles in general" (Wood). - The lacking sixth issue (with 8 plates) was not released before 1801. - Minimally foxed in places, 24 plates with minor defective corners. All in all nice broad-margined copy.

First German edition. 5 (of 6) issues. With 27 (24 col.) copperplates. Later interium boards (1 orig. wrapper bound in). - Lacking issue 6 (with 8 plates). Here and there foxing, 24 plates with small corner tear-off. Altogether fine wide-margined copy.
