PROVENANCE: Private collection North Germany.

Lesser Ury had great command of both painting in oil and pastels, which occupy an important position in his work. The artist is most famous for his Berlin street scenes, however, Ury was not content with his pictorial discoveries of the big city. He left the city and captivated the atmospheres of the landscapes that surround in all its shadings. It was also Ury who executed pastels in large formats, which was quite unusual in Germany in the 1890s. Our work is one of these large-format works and is a prime example of Lesser Ury's exceptional mastery in landscape pastels. Like no other he was able to captivate the landscape's atmosphere with its looming and light reflections. [SM].
