LITERATURE: Cf. Martin Urban, Emil Nolde. Blumen und Tiere, Cologne 1965, illu. p. 41.

All his life Emil Nolde felt closely connected with nature. This love for the nature he is surrounded by finds particular expression in his watercolors. The ample flower garden in Seebüll provides him with numerous models for his watercolors of flowers, their intensive colors deliver proof of Nolde’s mastery of his special color application technique, a technique that Nolde also employs in his watercolors of animals. This work seems to originate from earlier days, as a comparable work from 1916 proves. The heavy sky, typical of Nolde, can be observed on this sheet, while the two horses are still characterized by a graphical flow. [KD].
