Recognition as an artist and financial success came to Peter Brüning with the paintings he produced in 1955 and 1956. Those works reveal a development in his œuvre: in short, broad brush strokes, the tones of a limited palette are interwoven on a single plane. “In addition, there’s something personal: these pictures may be completely abstract but they are shot through with associations of a sensory kind – the movement of leaves, reflections on water, the feeling of bark between your fingers [...].” (John Anthony Thwaites, in: Peter Brüning.
