Erich Heckel captured genre-like scenes in several works, but this watercolor is far from being a contemplative description. The few almost sketchily jotted color surfaces are an expression of Heckel's methods. The rather restrained coloring and the composition's plane and decorative arrangement call reminiscence of the works of Henri Matisse, however, without being a deliberate imitation. with this work Heckel created a new interpretation of a traditional subject.
