"The woodcut is in three sections, of which the inner represents the Church Militant, while the two outer, each divided into six compartments, give figures of the four greater and of eight lesser Doctors of the Church, the names of whom are printed in the margin. The letter Surgant to Kesler states that the manuscript from which the book was printed was found 'in egregia insignis ecclesie Basiliesis bibliotheca'." Exlibris von Albert Ehrman und der Bibliotheca Broxbourniana. Fourth edition, the first by Nicolaus Kessler. With fullpage red coloured woodcut by the Master of Verardus. 248 leaves. Gothic type, rubricated. 2 col., 66 lines and head-line and marginalia. Contemp. black dyed pigskin over wooden boards with blindpress: framing by intersecting vertical and horizontal rules, its compartments with Phoenix tool and eagle lozenge, centrefield with symmetrically arranged lozenges, framed by leafy tools; clasps, centre- and cornerpieces removed. - Last leaf verso and 2 following leaves with a fine contemp. manuscript (copy of a text of Aquinas), in 2 columns and with headings. - F4 & 5 with cut-off to lower margin (loss of text carefully replaced by an early hand). Somewhat foxed and browned (affecting mostly the margins), few defective corners (rebacked). Some contemp. marginalia. Hinges somewhat cracking. - Old ownership inscriptions to first white leaf. Bookplates Albert Ehrman and Bibliotheca Broxbourniana.
