PROVENANCE: Private collection Northern Germany.

"I drew and painted the dunes, the sea, the wavelines, the crests, the foaming spray, the rowing fishermen, fighting the elements, treading across the beach, mending the nets and their wifes and daughters, bathing on the flooded sand, the resting boats with their tall masts, clouds and storm. My art, the work as fisherman's hand, and the joy that came with it, were inseparable."
(Hermann Max Pechstein, quoted from: Pechstein, Erinnerungen 1960, p. 37, in: Peter Thurmann, Max Pechstein. Ein Expressionist aus Leidenschaft, Retrospektive 2010, p. 21.)
