"I believe in the psychological effect colors have on people."
Rupprecht Geiger, quote after: Pinc kommt! Rupprecht Geiger, ex. cat., The Schaufler Foundation, Dresden 2017, p. 19.

Rupprecht Geiger developed his work with great continuity. As early as in the late 1940s he was one of the very few artists in Germany occupied with irregular image formats. Back then, however, always on one canvas. In addition, he modulated seemingly free-floating color surfaces with finely graded modulations in a striking color intensity. Rupprecht Geiger explicitly took up the motif of contrasting color spaces again in the group of works entitled "Farbräume“ (Color Spaces) from 1975 . Only two works in the group got the affix "Geist und Materie" (Spirit and Matter) as a contrasting pair in the title. He himself provides an explanation in his publication "Farbe ist Element", published in Düsseldorf in 1975: "Because only the perfect technical mastery of matter, the arrangement of forms in space, can make the immaterial essence of color tangible, whose intrinsic function is its effect on the human spirit". The two design components, form and space, are mutually dependent. A quarter of a century later, Rupprecht Geiger returns to the instrument of combining unequal colored surfaces in the group of works "Geist und Materie" (2003/04). Accordingly, this work undoubtedly deals with one of the main themes of his artistic creation. [EH]
