Ohne Titel (Tisch mit umgekippter Kanne II). 1969.
Black and white photograph. Gelatine silver print, solarized.
Signed, dated and inscribed "A.P.". This work has a unique character due to the treatment with sunlight. On matt photo paper. 51 x 50.5 cm (20 x 19.8 in). Sheet: 60,5 x 50,5 cm (23,9 x 19,8 in).
Proof from 1988/1990. [JS].
• In his early photographs Polke shows an alchemistical approach to art.
• Wonderful example of Polke's unrestrained joy in experimentation, as the influence of sunlight is included in the process of creation.
• Polke, the "anti-artist", defies the rules of classical photography and makes them an experimental medium of artistic expression.
• The creative potential of Polke's photography is just being rediscovered: This year an extensive exhibition was shown at the Max Hetzler Gallery, Berlin .
PROVENANCE: Berlin Projects, Berlin.
Private collection Great Britain (acquired from aforementioned in 2001).
"It has been pointed out that Polke likes to create situations in which it is not he who paints but it."
Bice Curiger, Der Mann mit der Lupe, 1992.
