PROVENANCE: Collection Igna - Marie Jünemann.

August Macke's love for the Orient culminated in a journey to Tunis together with Paul Klee and Louis Moilliet in 1914. However, August Macke became occupied with oriental scenes as early as in winter of 1909 in his home on Tegernsee. Inspired by the stories in 'Arabian Nights' he made several sheets with oriental, figural scenes. In addition, our sheet has a small drawing of Elisabeth Macke, the artist's wife, reading a book in upper left. [EH]
