In this work the battle scene and genre painter Wilhelm Meyerheim renders a lively scene on a densely populated river bank in Pommerania. People land hey, wooden beams and other commodities on a small pier, while the workman of a nearby inn hauls a heavy chest into a post coach that is ready for departure. The impressively towering stone buildings in the back are in strong contrast to the tranquility of the scene in the foreground. Meyerheim orchestrates the interplay of an almost rural idyl in front of an urban architecture with great poise. The artist, son of a family of painters from Gdansk, must have had a particular fancy for this contrast, as many similar scenes he made deliver proof of. [FS]
