Figurengruppe. 1911. Watercolor over graphite. Lower right possibly signed, dated and titled at a later point. On smooth paper. 27.3 x 34.3 cm (10.7 x 13.5 in) , size of sheet. Verso with a study of a bending figure in graphite, presumably executed around the same time. The watercolor was presumably made in Prerow on the Baltic Sea, where Heckel spent time with his later wife, the dancer Sidi Riha, in 1911. The lithography "In den Dünen" from 1911 (Dube 170) shows a similar motif of a dune scene with sevral figures, among them a lady standing in front of a dense brush and a reclined nude with crossed legs.
The work is registered at the estate Erich Heckel, Hemmenhofen. We are grateful to Renate Ebner and Hans Geissler for the kind support in cataloging this lot.
