Sale: 486 / Art of the 20/21 Century III, June 08. 2019 in Munich Lot 220

Lot description
Katwijk. 1880 /90.
Charcoal drawing.
Signed and dated in lower left. On grayish paper. 20.5 x 24.5 cm (8 x 9.6 in) , size of sheet.
This drawing was presumably signed by Liebermann at a later point, and therefore erroneously dated. A comparison of style and motif leads to the conclusion that it was made around 1890 (not 1880). [CH].

We are grateful to Drs. Margreet Nouwen, Berlin, for her kind support in cataloging this lot.

"Why is it that the swift sketch is often more perfect than the final picture? Because the sketch is created from imagination, while the weeks or even months of work on the painting kill all immagination."
Max Liebermann, in: Max Liebermann, Die Phantasie in der Malerei. Schriften und Reden, Frankfurt/Main 1978, p. 60
