"Encounters, experience, disappointments, encouragements, anchor points and hopes, that is what Volker Stelzmann's art in painting and etching is all about. His pictures are. on the one hand, concrete, for instance his portraits, but at the same time wrapped in allegories, metaphors and myths [..]. Nothing is really obvious and a lot remains unanswered. Late pictures by Stelzmann always offer more than one answer and leave the observer in the dark: In the end, the observer has to come up with an answer."
