As a volunteer in WWI Ernst Ludwig Kirchner was stationed in Halle/Saale for some time in 1915. Gercken mentions ten lithographs and two woodcuts that were made during that time. They show scenes from the daily lifes of the recruits. Kirchner illustrates the drill and the soldiers' anonymization through their conformist posture. The war experience led to the artist's nervous breakdown in autumn the same year. [EH]
