Negerin II. 1964.
Oil on canvas.
Forstbauer/Merkert/Kunisch/Behrens 64.16. Signed in center at bottom. Verso of canvas inscribed with a direction arrow and with further crossed-out inscriptions. Verso of the stretcher dated and inscribed "'Negerin' II". 156 x 140 cm (61.4 x 55.1 in).
The inscription on verso of the stretcher and a crossed-out shipping label on the canvas suggest the painting's origin. The label from the 'Biennale de Paris' is typographically inscribed 'Moolb I', whereas the stretcher is inscribed with the title 'Negerin II'.
Hanne Forstbauer points out that Walter Stöhrer overpainted the work 'Moolb I' (WV 63.2) with 'Negerin II'. This was not known when the catalog raisonné was compiled, which is why both works are listed with different numbers and the annotation "Verbleib unbekannt" (whereabouts unknown). According to these latest findings, the number 64.16 is relevant. [EH].

We are grateful to Mrs.Forstbauer, Walter-Stöhrer-Foundation, Schleswig, for her kind support in cataloging thisd lot.

PROVENANCE: Private collection Rhineland.
