This is a preliminary drawing for a lithograph from Barlach's first play "Der tote Tag", published in 1912 as portfolio with insert text volume by Paul Cassirer, Berlin. As the artist wanted to make sure he transferred every detail of the preliminary drawing to the print some of the drawings, among them this one, have grid lines. This sheet shows the gnome "Steißbart" sitting in front of the sleeping son's bed. [AP].
