Essay
Influenced by his friends Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Erich Heckel, who had discovered a new world of plein-air painting with their subjects of bathing nudes at the Moritzburg Lakes, interpretes their ideas in a new and till then unusual manner. While Kirchner and Heckel focus on the lusty and animalistic aspects in their works, Mueller's bathing nudes are charcaterized by much more reservation. As far as the composition is concerned, Otto Mueller hints at Edouard Manet's "Déjeuner sur l`herbe", even though he only shows female nudes. Otto Mueller renders a harmony of the sensual experience of nature and the sensuality of the female body, underlined by a palette dominated by soft shades of green and blue. The surrounding nature is far more present than in works by Kirchner and Heckel. Otto Mueller's nudes live in it as if they were born into it. Mueller does not take pleasure in his colleagues' bold colors, his works and their strong graphic duct are always characterized by a palette that finds its tone in a balance of contrasts.
