In a letter to Reinhard Piper from 9 March, 1917 Max Beckmann wrote the following:".I thought you might be interested in my latest etching "Der Abend". I have a good proof of it.., in case you would like to use it in your book, I could send it to you immediately. The etching resembles my war etchings, but, similar to Bathseba, it has a latent erotic atmosphere and liklely is one of my best works." (Source: Hofmaier, Max Beckmann, Bern 1990, p. 239)
