"Bürkel´s first stay in Rome [1830 to 1832] was at the peak of his mental performance. He found his motifs like pebbles on the banks of a river, and arranged them in imaginative mosaics in his studio. He seldom aimed for a verist image, fully in line with the tradition of German travel painters […]. This is where the art […] of the Bamboccianti came to live again. Bürkel rendered little new findings as far as the development of art history was concerned. [..] [He] took the last remains of stiffness from the pictures of the Bammboccianti, bringing a bustling life back to the old walls." (Hans-Peter Bühler/Albrecht Krückl, Heinrich Bürkel, Munich 1989, pp. 118f.). The painting "Am Dorfbrunnen in den italienischen Bergen" was not made before 1852/53, however, first village well scenes that were influenced by his first Italian journeycan be found in his works from the 1830s. As usual, he made several variations of the motif over the years. This work presumably is the painting "Scene am Brunnen eines römischen Städtchens", which was on display at several exhibitions in Hanover, Halberstadt, Leipzig and Gotha in 1853.
