'What is a picture? A picture is a field of force, an arena where the author's energies, molten, poured in the paints' motion, received through the abundance of the universe, is led into the capillaries of the observer’s open mind.' (Otto Piene 1959, quote after: Künstler. Kritisches Lexikon der Gegenwartskunst, volume 13, p. 2). In the short combustion process Piene lets the paint coagulate on the image carrier. When the fire becomes extinguished the new structure is fixated, accordingly, nature's organic becoming is confronted with the artist's means of creation. The fire's destructive traces form various modifications on the image carrier that the artist can determine only to a certain extent.
