In his landscape and village views Max Peiffer-Watenphul does not only depict what he sees, he rather is a master in rendering sensation on canvas. In this work it is monumental heaviness of the ancient ruin's of the Baths of Caracalla in Rome. Next to our work , the catalog raisonné mentions two further illustrations of these baths. For our painting there is also a draft in black ballpoint pen and black ink in sketchbook III in existence.
