PROVENANCE: Weinmüller, Munich art auctioneer Rudolf Neumeister, auction no. 91, 30 September - 2 October, 1964, cat. 99, lot 1851 (with black and white illu. in cat., plate 132)
Collection Max Geiger.

After brief studies with Karl Theodor von Piloty, Wilhelm Diez increasingly taught art himself and founded an artist's association in Munich with Wilhelm Busch in 1863. Until 1875 Diez contributed works to the 'Münchener Bilderbogen'. As of 1870 he taught at the Munich Academy, where the Diez School soon attained great popularity. Besides works by Leibl, his art is considered the best of its days, in doing so he remained true to small formats, which was not the general trend in those days, because they allowed his mostly spirited duct to perfectly unfold. He was ennobled in 1893.
