Komposition. 1960. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated upper right. 100 x 139,5 cm (39,3 x 54,9 in).
This work's authenticity has kindly been confirmed by Prof. Markus Lüpertz. We are grateful for his support in cataloging this lot.
Around 1960 the artist made the first paintings that were still under an academic influence. The economic boom in those days, however, did not help Lüpertz to entirely ignore the wartime. With large paintings such as this one, kept in earthen tones and with barely exactly perceptible monumental forms placed side by side, he stuck to the traditions of Modern Art but also developed his own style. The observer can literally feel Lüpertz's conflict regarding figuration and abstraction. [DB].
