PROVENANCE: Fritz Reuter, Wallbach (present from artist on occasion of his engagement in April 1942).

The two heads leaned towards one another, here as a symbol of ardency, are an old motif that can be found in painting ever since Italian Renaissance, even if in early illustrations the people were depicted with more distance between them. Schlemmer used this motif quite often and found solutions for the composition in the heads' disposition towards one another, which complied with his intentions both in terms of the formal and emotional expression. The light coloring underlines the work's close emotional keynote, which documents the work's actual intention. [KD]
