Weite Voralpenlandschaft mit Schafherde und Hirte. 1850.
Oil on canvas.
Signed, dated and inscribed "München" lower right. 63,5 x 84 cm (25 x 33 in).

Johann Gottfried Steffan was born in Switzerland in 1815 where he first did an apprenticeship as lithographer. In 1833 he came to Munich where he continued working as lithographer, but he also took drawing lessons with Schnorr von Carolsfeld, Kaulbach and others. As of 1839 Steffan was committed to drawing exclusively, his style shows strong influences of Dutch painting and particularly of Carl Rottmann. He was a friend of Friedrich Voltz, who had also worked as a lithographer and etcher but then also began to paint. Steffan's most famous student was Joseph Wenglein. [CB].
