it goes back to a legend according to which Potjomkin deceived the tsarina during an inspection journey through Novorossiya (New Russia), today the Ukraine, with mock villages. The tsarina should not see the actual dilapidated state of the region. [CB].
PROVENANCE: Collection Karl Gustav von Staal (1778-1853).
Since the 19th century in possession of German-Baltic nobility.
