The drastic contrasts in an uprooted society are the preferred themes of the avant-garde artists of the 1920s. Ehmsen, who also worked up the same topic in form of etchings, takes on the means of an illustration with grotesque traits in order to depict social misery, thus adding more bitingness to the subject. The influence of works by George Grosz is clearly visible, however, thy differ in artistic expression. While Grosz picks out the state of a society’s moral decay as a central theme, Ehmsen visualizes the individual’s deformations as a consequence of the social distortions of those days. [KD].
