PROVENANCE: Private collection Southern Germany (acquired directly from artist).

After serving in World War II Franz Radziwill returned to his house in Dangast in 1945 where he continued his masterly depiction of seemingly banal things in a magic coolness. Just as it was the case with his lawn- and flower pieces from the time before the war, this small work reminds the observer of Dürer's "Großes Rasenstück" from 1503 in terms of the topic, but also because of the unusually low perspective. Dürer's work was regarded a key work of landscape art north of the Alps for its radical choice of topic and its great love for the detail. However, in this work Radziwill isolates the individual blossoms and places the filigree plantain and the single peony blossoms in front of an impervious black background. With this artificial background concept, the depiction of nature, which is completed by a spherical construction in the upper part, is in an impressive contrast and is even more enhanced to a Magic Realism of an inimitable presence.
