We are grateful to Mr. Wolfgang Schüller, Munich, for his kind help in cataloging this lot.

PROVENANCE: Private collection South Germany (acquired directly from the artist by previous owner at an exhibition in Bad Wiessee).

The swift and pastose application of colors, which is geared at Impressionism, is quite typical for the early works of Otto Pippel, to which this painting also belongs. Pippel dramatically captured the particular light atmosphere of foliage bathed in sunlight with its appealing contrasts of light and shade in this scene in a beer garden. With his color application he added a vibrancy to the image that keeps the motif in good stead. Pippel's virtuous painting soon caught on with the audience, as it enabled the painter continue the pate that he had once found, unaffected by contemporary streams, which often had a decisive impact on the art of so many of his colleagues.
