Peter Brüning - Retrospektive seines Werkes, Moderne Galerie des Saarlandmuseums Saarbrücken/Museum am Osterwall Dortmund, 1988, cat. no. 36 (with illustration).

Influenced by French Informel painting, Brüning became one of the most successful exponents of German Informel in the 1950s. Although his painting was notable in his early years for a dark palette and dense handling, his style grew lighter and sparser under the influence of his friend Cy Twombly, becoming gestural, more spacious and dynamic. Brüning’s rhythmic and highly gestural brushwork opened out and line resolved itself towards the picture margins. Black calligraphic line, varying in density of paint and thickness of brush stroke, became the dominant feature of his work. Linear configurations were embedded in a delicate palette of reticent blues and browns. Generously cast, highly gestural line and a delicate palette united to form vibrant spatial compositions.
