PROVENANCE: Private collection southern Germany.

Béla Kádár belonged to the main representatives of Hungarian Modernism. After he had finished his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest, he spent some years in Vienna, Munich and Paris at the turn of the century. As of 1912 Kádár lived and worked in Berlin, where he also returned to after serving in World War I. In the German capital Kádár was part of the circle of artists of Herwarth Walden's gallery "Der Sturm" and showed works in the gallery's legendary exhibitions between 1922 and 1925. Kádár developed a unique artistic hand, which showed folkloristic influences from his Hungarian home country, merged with notions of Cubist and Expressionist painting. Our two gouaches "Mutter mit Kind und Katze" and "Frau mit Blumenstrauß" do not solely impress the observer in terms of technical perfection and a great love for the detail, but also with their strange scenes.
