Gespenstischer Fischfang/II. Um 1930.
Pen and India ink drawing.
Raabe 414. Signed lower right, titled lower left. On laid paper. 36 : 26 cm (14,1 : 10,2 in), size of sheet. Alfred Kubin's outstanding talent as a drawer, both in terms of technique as well as subject treatment, is documented in a remarkable manner in this drawing. The airiness of the brush visualises the sinister subject in a playfuland elegant way, to which the rococo habit of the fisherman contributes. The theme is not a struggle between fish against man as in Hemmingway's "The old man and the sea". The huge fish swims towards the fisherman with a friendly smile, metaphor for a demonical possession that seems even more threatening with all its innocence. [KD]
