Watercolour and pen and India ink.
Signed and dated lower right. On wove paper (with watermark "Whatman 907 England"). 43,5 : 53,5 cm (17,1 : 21 in), the full sheet. In the watercolours Heckel did in the early 1920s, the radically reductive force of the expressive statement has yielded to spontaneous handling of line with no loss of expression. The means Heckel has here deployed so sparingly to capture the impression made on him by a landscape attest to the creative powers at his disposal in this important period of his career. [KD]
