Astronomie. - Bode, J. E., Uranographia sive astrorum descriptio viginti tabulis aeneis incisa ex recentissimis et absolutissimis astronomorum observationibus. Sumtus commodante ... Fr. de Hahn. Atlasband. Mit doppelblattgr. gest. Titel mit Bordüre und 20 doppelblattgr. gest. Sternkarten. Berlin, Selbstverlag 1801. HLdr. d. Zt. mit RSch. Gr.-Folio. 2 Bll. (Vorwort und Index)
Kenney 24. - Warner S. 39. - Poggendorff I, 217f. - Schröder I, 289, 25. - DSB II, 220f. - Schwemin 16. - "Bode's literary activity more than made up for the observatory's deficiencies ... His two sky atlases were for a long time indespensable tools for astronomers: the 'Vorstellung der Gestirne', which according to the example set by John Flamsteed's atlas, contained more than 5.000 stars; and the Uranographia, which surpassed all its predecessors by listing over 17.000 stars and containing, for the first time, the nebulae, star clusters, and double stars discovered by William Herschel." (ADB III, 1) - "Bode's Uranographia, successor to the celestial atlases of Bayer, Hevelius, and Flamsteed, was the most extensive and the last great atlas of its kind ... Consequently later atlases designed for popular astronomy were limited to naked-eye stars and particularly notable nebulas, while those designed for professional astronomers charted all known celestial objects, more rational boundaries, and hardly any constellation figures."
Major cartographic work by the German astronomer Johann Elert Bode, one of the most important authors in this field of the 18th century. Doublepage engr. title and 20 doublepage celestial charts. Contemp. half calf. - Slightly fingerstaining at the bottom, only few leaves minim. brownstained, first four leaves (incl. engr. title) with marginal tear of about 5 cm and additional tear at the bottom of pages, the two globe charts in the lower margins with small defects. Binding with traces of use. - Overall a fine clean copy with the magnificent folio celestial charts printed on strong paper. - Nearly all charts bear entries in red ink, carefully marking additional stars or correcting the stars' positions. According to the former owner, the atlas has been in possession of Bode's family all the time, and so the corrections might be entered presumably by Bode's own hands.
