Karl Horst Hödicke
1938 - 2024
Piccadilly. 1973.
Synthetic resin on canvas.
Signed and titled on the reverse of the canvas. 190 x 155 cm (74.8 x 61 in).
With additional studies by the artist on the reverse. [AR].
• “Piccadilly”—almost unrecognizable and yet so familiar: Hödicke’s version of Piccadilly Circus in London, featuring the famous three-armed street lamps, the red of the double-decker buses, and the neon lights of the “Coke” advertisement.
• Radical shifts in perspective, disorienting cropping, and bold colors characterize Hödicke’s works from this period.
• In terms of the visual concept, comparable to key motifs in Hödicke’s oeuvre, such as the sky over Schöneberg, the cobblestone streets, the storefronts, and the neon advertisements of the big city.
• One year after the painting was created, Hödicke was appointed professor of painting at the Berlin University of the Arts.
• Offered on the international auction market for the first time.
PROVENANCE: Private collection, Berlin.
