Hans (Jean) Arp
1886 - 1966
Selon les lois du hasard. 1951.
Wooden relief.
Signed and dated in typography on a label on the reverse, as well as titled, numbered, and inscribed with the technique. One of 3 copies. 29.5 x 44.4 x 3.2 cm (11.6 x 17.4 x 1.2 in).
The relief is related to the woodcut “Placé selon les lois du hasard,” in: Jean Arp, Dreams and Projects, Curt Valentin, New York 1951/52, no. 3 (Arntz 150). [KA].
• A compelling example of Hans Arp’s innovative exploration of the relief.
• Arp shapes biomorphic, free-floating spheres out of the wood.
• As early as 1917, wood reliefs occupied a key position in Arp’s artistic oeuvre.
• In 1958, Arp was among the few artists to have a retrospective dedicated to him at the Museum of Modern Art in New York during his lifetime.
• Hans Arp is widely regarded as a key figure of the European avant-garde.
