1869 - 1954
Odalisque au coffret rouge. 1926.
Etching and aquatint in colors.
Signed and numbered. From an edition of 200 copies. On Arches wove paper (with the watermark). 42 x 55.5 cm (16.5 x 21.8 in). Sheet: 56,7 x 74,3 cm (22,04 x 29,13 in).
After the painting of same name from 1926. [MH].
• Colorful print based on the painting of the same name by Henri Matisse.
• The color aquatint demonstrates Matisse's extraordinary ability to transfer painterly areas of color to a print medium.
• The odalisque is depicted in a sensual yet formalized manner – a paradigmatic example of the modern approach to the nude.
• Most recently, the Fondation Beyeler, Riehen/Basel, honored the artist with the exhibition “Matisse – Invitation to Travel” (September 22, 2024–January 26, 2025).
PROVENANCE: Private collection (since 1959, Stuttgart Art Cabinet).
Baden-Württemberg Collection (since 2026, acquired from the above).
LITERATURE: Marguerite Duthuit-Matisse, Claude Duthuit, Henri Matisse. Catalogue raisonné de l’oeuvre gravé, vol. 2, Paris 1983, CR no. III.
--
Stuttgarter Kunstkabinett, 34th auction, November 20/21, 1959, lot 550.
In good condition. Slightly browned overall except for the outer narrow margins. With a few small brown spots. With a small tear on the lower right margin, barely noticeable to the naked eye, expertly repaired.
