Emil Nolde
1867 - 1956
Meer mit roten Wolken und Segelschiff. 1946.
Watercolor.
Signed in the lower left. On Japan paper. 22 x 25.7 cm (8.6 x 10.1 in), the full sheet.
In 1946, Ada and Emil Nolde stayed at the spa resort “Goldener Schlüssel” in St. Peter-Ording on the North Sea from April 27 to May 14 at the invitation of the then director of the clinic, Dr. Oskar Arnold. They were accommodated in the facility’s finest room with a view over the dunes towards the North Sea. Ada's health improved noticeably before she passed away in November of the same year. Emil Nolde returned to St. Peter the following year, probably in memory of the happy days they had spent there together a few months earlier. [CH].
• North Sea in a blaze of color: Nolde translates his experience of nature directly and emotionally.
• Using his characteristic wet-on-wet technique and a refined reflection of the sky, the artist creates a landscape depiction between naturalism and abstraction with a particularly atmospheric density.
• A fascinating combination of bold, expansive, expressive colors and striking lines.
• Part of a German private collection for almost 80 years.
• Emil Nolde is considered the greatest watercolorist of the 20th century thanks to his atmospheric landscapes..
Accompanied by a photo certificate issued by Prof. Martin Urban on April 15, 1996 and a written certificate issued by the Foundation Seebüll Ada and Emil Nolde on October 14, 2025. The work is registered under the number “Fr.A.2134” and will be included in a future catalogue raisonné of Emil Nolde's watercolors and drawings.
PROVENANCE: Private collection, northern Germany (probaly obtained as a gift from the artist in 1947).
Ever since in family ownership.
"Following an invitation, we traveled to St. Peter, a small spa town in the southwestern corner of Eiderstedt. [..] She [Ada Nolde] felt so well here that we were able to walk and lie in the dunes every day, and one Sunday we walked for two hours along footpaths, through green fields and all around St. Peter. [..] We rejoiced like the skylarks in the air."
Emil Nolde about his spa stay with his wife Ada in 1946, quoted from: Emil Nolde, Reisen. Ächtung. Befreiung: 1919-1946, Cologne 1978, p. 175.
